We're not amused, Tennessee.

Taxed on Healthy Choices?

The Tennessee Department of Revenue recently implemented a change in the "Amusement Tax" policy to expand the umbrella and apply this tax to most fitness classes and personal training sessions (see notice here).  The state of Tennessee is already one of the most unhealthy states in the U.S. and is currently ranked number 45th in the country by America's Health rankings. Therefore, increasing the cost of fitness classes and personal training session by implementing this tax seems counter intuitive, if the health of Tennesseans is of any importance to the state.  Increasing the cost of true “healthcare” and making physical activity more unattainable for Tennesseans is not what we need. It would be more logical to take a page out of the United Kingdoms’ book and increase tax on unhealthy choices, like their “sugar tax.”

The Center for Disease Control states that as little as 60 minutes of physical activity per week can help reduce the risk of a multitude of serious heath problems. Serious problems like stokes, cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and numerous more. Therefore, it would make more sense to incentivize fitness class and personal training participants, not tax them for taking responsibility of their health into their own hands. As much as we try to make fitness fun, it is by no means simply an amusing, entertainment experience, and should not be taxed as such.

To add insult to injury - this tax is only intended for small boutique fitness centers. Centers like TNB Fitness, yoga studios, barre studios, and more, are all targeted for additional taxation. Meanwhile large facilities that have 15,000 square feet, and are open 70 hours per week, are exempt from this tax.

So… What can YOU do about it?!

Please join us in combating this recent ruling that alters the "Amusement Tax" to include fitness classes and personal training sessions and sign our petition.  We like to think we are personable and entertaining coaches here at TNB Fitness - but we're not amusing enough to warrant being taxed on it!

Let's do something to help ENCOURAGE Tennesseans to live a healthy lifestyle and take true "healthcare" into their own hands - not tax them on their healthy choices.

2) Read on about how you can support the PHIT Act pending in congress right now and let your representatives know you support it! This is a small step towards adding preventative care to our healthcare system!

The PHIT Act

The PHIT Act, Personal Health Investment Today Act, if passed, would allow taxpayers to place up to $2,000 a year into their pre-tax medical account AND use these pre-taxed dollars towards physical activity expenses. This act would give an incentive for individuals to exercise, ultimately decreasing or preventing healthcare costs in the future, related to preventable chronic diseases. this is a monumental step for us because it would actually put an element of prevention into our “healthcare” system, which could arguably be called our “sickcare” system in its current state.

If the PHIT Act is put into place it will help to lower the cost of fitness and exercise activities, promote a healthy lifestyle, and ultimately improve the health of Americans.

Activities that would be eligible for pre-tax reimbursement would be:

  • Youth & Adult Sports League Fees

  • Health Club Membership Dues

  • Exercise Classes & Personal Trainers

  • Sports & Fitness Equipment (used exclusively for participation in physical activities)

  • Youth Camps

  • Pay-to-Play School Sports Fees

  • Organized Running Event Registration Fees

  • Martial Arts, Gymnastics & other Physical Activities

THIS is a step in a right direction and we encourage you to voice your support - here are some ways to do this:

  1. Email your Member of Congress

  2. Call your Representatives - express your support of the PHIT Act!

  3. Write a letter you your Representatives

  4. Engage in our Social Media campaign to increase awareness of the PHIT act (share this post and hashtag #PHITamerica #PassPHIT

  5. Network - encourage others to do the above with you!

Let’s speak up against the policies that make living healthy lifestyles more difficult (new taxation in TN), and support legislation that will help encourage Americans to improve their physical activity levels and overall health (PHIT Act)!

Thank you!

What attracted you to TNB FITNESS/What motivated you to join TNB?

I have always been a daily early morning exerciser and about 18 months ago, I changed jobs and began working out at a different YMCA in order to accommodate an earlier work start. That change in routine altered the fitness regimen I had been on and, with the stress of a new job, I found myself with some weight gain and had definitely lost strength and leanness. So when I happened into a conversation at a cocktail party where words like “transformational” and “life changing” were being used, I asked what they were talking about — TNB Fitness of course! The timing was perfect. I called Tash, went in for an evaluation and the rest is history.

How do you feel now compared to when you started training at TNB?

I feel great. I’m starting to get my lean muscle mass back, my energy is much higher and I know I am working smartly and safely with the individualized workouts and attentive trainers.

How has TNB helped you reach your goals?

My goals were to get leaner, stronger and, of course, lose a few pounds. I’m a “rules” girl and I’ve been very consistent and done everything Tash has suggested with both exercise and nutrition. It is truly a balance and one does not work without the other. It was taking longer than I wanted to start seeing results but I knew that I was doing the right things so I persevered. Now my clothes are fitting better and the scale is moving in the right direction. It feels wonderful.

What advice would you give to a person looking to join TNB?

It is a most encouraging atmosphere and the attentiveness to form by the trainers is absolutely unparalleled. The staff is so knowledgeable about physiology, safety and what women of a certain age need to get and stay strong. If you want to stay motivated in a compassionate yet challenging environment, TNB Fitness is the place for you. I love it!

Client Last words -

I’m a very goal oriented person. Nothing feels better to me than moving up to the next level or a heavier weight because it means I’m getting stronger.

What attracted you to TNBFITNESS/What motivated you to join TNB?

What initially attracted me to TNB Fitness was that it is women only and 0.3 miles from my home.  I decided to join TNB after meeting with Tash at the initial consultation.  At the time, my BMI was considered overweight.  Most of my family struggles with obesity and I did not want that to happen to me.  I wanted to get and stay fit so I could live a healthier and happier life.

How do you feel now compared to when you started training at TNB?

I can tell a huge difference already.  I have lost 15 pounds, I am so much stronger, and I have a lot more confidence.  My sleep and overall quality of life have also improved.

How has TNB helped you reach your goals?

TNB keeps me motivated because the workouts change regularly.  It is not the same thing over and over again.  I increase repetitions and weight after just a couple of workouts which is encouraging and shows I am getting stronger.  My BMI is also now considered in the normal range.

What advice would you give to a person looking to join TNB?

Definitely try it out!  The trainers are great and no one is there to judge you.

How long have you been a member of TNBFITNESS?

Since August 2016

What attracted you to TNBFITNESS/What motivated you to join TNB?

A close friend recommended TNB to me and I decided to check it out.  I had spent the last 5+ years trying to recover from a back injury, and was frustrated by multiple setbacks.  It seemed every time I would start making progress, I’d re-injure my back and be behind where I’d begun. I was impressed that Tash took so much time with the initial consultation—not only with the physical assessment, but with getting to know my story, my physical challenges, and my goals.  I appreciated that it is a women-only environment, and that my TNB membership would help support the non-profit side, The New Beginnings Center.

How do you feel now compared to when you started training at TNB?

I feel stronger and have much more confidence in my body’s capabilities.  I no longer feel limited by past injuries to my shoulder, wrists, knee, and back.  I’m able to do more than I thought I was capable of, and would’ve been too scared to try (such as a kettle bell deadlift).  I’m always inspired by what the other ladies are able to do, and at first I wondered if I’d ever get there.  I’m excited to see that I’m making steady progress, both inside and outside the gym.  Many exercises that I once needed assistance or modifications for, I’m now able to do without assistance or modifications.  Yay!  It’s also so encouraging to see that although I may struggle when I begin a new workout, I’m doing more reps and/or heavier weights within just a couple of training sessions.  Outside of the gym, I’m walking more and more miles, and can accomplish moderate hikes.  Soon I know I’ll be able to bike again, hike strenuous trails, and even hike carrying a backpack!  A long-term goal of mine has been to hike The Camino de Santiago when my son starts college.  The Camino is a 770km route from St Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.  Before I started training at TNB, I was so discouraged I had begun to fear I would never be able to accomplish that.  Now I know that it’s not a matter of IF I’ll be able to hike the Camino but WHEN.

How has TNB helped you reach your goals?

TNB has provided me with the results that come from consistently showing up at the gym and following a varied, progressive training program. Most of all, the trainers at TNB are amazing!  Tash, Gabe, and Marielle are so very positive and encouraging.  I have used other trainers in the past, and did not respond well to a one-size-fits-all program or someone yelling at me to push myself.  My experience at TNB has been nothing like that!  I know without a doubt they are there to help me to safely challenge myself and to meet my goals.  They always ensure that I’m using proper form and “meet me where I am”, modifying workouts if necessary, or showing me additional stretches to do if my muscles are stiff or sore.  For example: My back seized up after a weekend of boating last fall.  When I was able to return to the gym, the trainers were great at helping me to recover by modifying my workout.  They taught me stretches and exercises to not only address my back pain, but to help me prevent it from happening again in the future.

What advice would you give to a person looking to join TNB?

Do it!! You will be so very glad you did!  When it comes to meeting health and fitness goals, nothing can compare to the knowledge, guidance, and encouragement you receive from the trainers at TNB.
